everglades report reinforces purre's work

October 11, 2010

Dear PURRE Members:

At the link below is a report by the National Academy of Sciences, "Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades." It's a good summary, and we call your attention to the graphic on page 2 (Figure 2), which shows three maps:

     *
the historical conditions in South Florida with water flowing from Lake Okeechobee through the Everglades to Florida Bay;

     * the current conditions, with water going west down the Caloosahatchee and east down the St. Lucie rivers; and

     * the conditions envisioned upon complete restoration, with a flow way again going south through the Everglades.

This restored flow way is one of the things PURRE has been working very hard to bring about. The purchase of U.S. Sugar land is vital to achieving this, and we will have to keep pressure on the South Florida Water Management District to exercise its options over the next three years to acquire more land.

Other issues mentioned in the report have also been priorities for PURRE: stormwater treatment areas to clean water and increased pollution controls on agricultural lands.

We hope you'll take a few minutes to read the report and thank you for your support. For more information, visit our Web site,

think about this...

"We must build a peace in South Florida - a peace between the people and their place, between the natural environment and man-made settlement, between the works of man and the life of mankind itself. "
~ Florida Gov. Reubin Askew ~
