Michael, chairman of the city's Planning Commission, is a home builder on the island since moving to Sanibel in 1991. He and his wife, Maureen, formed the PURRE Water Coalition in 2004 when scum appeared on the canal behind their home -- and no one could answer their questions. Last year they were named one of "Five Who Made A Difference" by Gulf Coast magazine, and in 2006 were named "People of the Year" by the Sanibel Captiva Chamber of Commerce.
